Night Sky Safari

Come and experience an unforgettable night of observational astronomy under the skies of Kielder. Based within Northumberland National Park, Kielder is home to the largest expanse of protected dark skies in Europe known as the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

The “Night Sky Safari” sessions, held at Kielder Observatory, are specifically geared towards maximising observing time through telescopes.

What does it involve?

When you arrive you will receive a short introduction to the night’s planned observing schedule. You will also receive tuition on how to use the telescopes to maximise your experience.

The expert volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions and will be your guides around the night sky.

You will be given a laser-guided tour of the constellations giving tips on how you yourself can find all sorts of objects; no previous star gazing experience is necessary.

Learn how to discover things including planets, star clusters and galaxies; the brightest of which can be seen with the naked eye from the observation deck. You may even catch a glimpse of the International Space Station as it glides across the sky!

On cold nights the log fire will keep the observatory warm and cosy. Refreshments, including our famous hot chocolate, will be available. Take your hot drinks outside, relax on the observation deck and observe the Milky Way as it arches across the sky above you.

If you own your own telescope you are welcome to bring it with you, this is a great opportunity to get some expert advice!
